Our October

October is a very busy month for photographers. I learned this the hard way last year. I was booked up with weddings every weekend and portraits sessions on most weekdays. I missed trick-or-treating with Aidan, and barely had time to squeeze in a trip to get our pumpkins. In November of last year, I vowed to myself and my family that I would schedule family time, make them a priority this year. And it felt oh-so-good. As much as I love what I do and my clients, I refuse to miss the special moment’s in my son’s life for anything…

October is by far my favorite month, and fall is my favorite season. There’s nothing better than the leaves crunching under your feet, the beautiful colors in nature, the scent of autumn candles, and the warm sip of apple cider in your mouth. Love it all.

This year we made a trip out to Eckerts to pick apples (with which we made some really yummy apple crisp), we picked out pumpkins at Rambach’s, visited Grant’s Farm with Aidan’s cousins, and had a blast carving our pumpkin and trick-or-treating with Dan’s parents. It was a great month, though it passed a little too quickly and was a tad too warm for my liking.

First up was picking apples.

Then it was pumpkin time.

Making, uh, sand angels…

I love this next shot because it reminds me of this one from last year...

Wiped out.

Then it was time for soccer with Opa.

And last but not least, football boy!!! He didn’t want me to take any pictures, he just wanted to go get CANDY.

Love you buddy…Thanks for a great October.

Time is flying by…

In just over 2 months, my baby will be 4. 4? When on earth did that happen? It’s an utter cliche, but it seems like just yesterday, we were leaving the hospital with that tiny little boy who only weighed 6 pounds and a few ounces, wondering how on earth the doctors and nurses were trusting this child in our care. All those sleepless nights, the crying, the million diaper changes are all a distant memory, and now all I remember are the sweet cuddly times and all his wonderful milestones. I’m guessing I’m incredibly emotional these days because I’m baking baby Welch #2 (sorry, I don’t think I ever formally announced it on the blog. SURPRISE!) , but it does make me tear up to think how much I love that little guy. He is my life.

Just last night, we happened to stumble upon some old videos of Aidan when he was a tiny baby. Videos he had never seen…And when he did see them, he was fascinated. He wanted to watch every single one. At midnight. And we did.

And even though he’s almost 4 years old, he’s still the same. He still has the same infectious smile, the same little giggle, the same love of the outdoors, the same love of sports, the same sweet disposition, the same love to snuggle. I really hope all of those wonderful qualities stay with him over the course of his lifetime because I absolutely love each and other one. I love you little “big” man.

First day of preschool!

My baby is not a baby any longer. He had his first day of preschool last week, and he did SO well. I was really proud of him. Parents were able to go in the classrooms with the kids for about 30 minutes to help get them accustomed. We played at the sand table, with playdough, and painted. All of Aidan’s favorite things in the first 10 minutes! Eventually it was time for me to leave …*tear*… and he grabbed onto my leg and said “NO MOMMY.” He looked like he was going to cry, but one of the teachers came up to him and asked him if he wanted to play trains. That was the magic word. I walked out of the room and listened by the door. He couldn’t care less that I was gone. Success! He did really well, and when I picked him up, he immediately came in the house, took off all his clothes and his shoes, asked for some warm milk, Ben (his stuffed dog), and he asked in his sweetest voice, “Mommy, will you bring my bed downstairs?” He had a little rest on the couch, but not for long because then it was time for t-ball. I couldn’t believe he made it through all that with no nap.

Love this guy.

He was so proud to bring his big boy back pack that his Oma sent him.

Nap time

Aidan and I were playing outside in the extreme Missouri heat, and all of a sudden he just plopped down. Luckily, my camera was nearby.

My little sports guy

Ok, if I’m really honest, he’s a sports FANATIC. Not a day, or probably hour – more realistically, goes by without my son swinging a bat, kicking a soccer ball, running laps around the house, swinging a tennis racket, dancing (he calls it shaking his bootie), or bouncing a basketball. Oh, and I forgot hockey. Hockey’s a big one. I shoudl also add that he doesn’t really even need the ball or the bat/aparatus needed for said sports. He can also play pretend sports. And sometimes he likes to play them naked, but that’s another story for another day. (But yes, that’s an at home only thing. Promise.)

During his 3 shorts years of life, he has played soccer, had swimming lessons, did a gymnastics class, but I knew baseball would be a good one to try… Honestly, I think baseball is his absolute favorite sport. He knows Albert Pujols’ face and number. He recognizes most teams by their picture and will say their team name. If we’re in the city, he MUST see Busch Stadium. He adores all things baseball. From the National Anthem, to the peanuts and Cracker Jax, and even baseball movies – most notably Angels in the Outfield and Rookie of the Year. When we watch those movies, he even puts his little baseball hat over his heart and stands very still until it’s over. That in itself is a small miracle.

When I found out our YMCA had t-ball for 3-year-olds, I knew I had so sign him up. He was so excited when I told him. On the way to what I thought would be his first practice, he asked if they would sing the National Anthem. I didn’t have the heart to tell him no, so I just kind of avoided the question. He did forget about it, but when we got there and realized someone had told us the wrong day, Aidan was absolutely devastated. I’ve never seen him so upset. No injury could match the pain he felt that day, and it completely broke my heart. I’m actually sitting here tearing up at the thought. That’s how serious it was. He sobbed, and we sat on the curb of the parking lot for a good 10 minutes while I had to explain to him that his t-ball wasn’t today. His team wasn’t here. All the little boys out on the field were older, bigger, more advanced t-ball players. T-ball for little guys didn’t start for 2 more weeks. I had to wipe his tears and bribe him with a trip to Target where we bought him a new glove, a bat, batting helmet and a t. And then his dad met us at the field where we played baseball for a good hour and a half. He didn’t care about the playground. He just wanted to play baseball, and he probably would have played until the sun went down.

So there you have it. An understanding of just how monumental this first t-ball practice was. He was so intense, listened so well to his coach, encouraged the other boys, ran hard, and even tackled a few teammates to get the ball. (We did have a discussion about tackling.) What a great day. And of course, I brought my camera. I am SO going to be that mom. Sorry, buddy.

So focused!

Could he be any more excited?!

Told ya. Tackling at t-ball.

And his favorite part – batting! I love the look on his face. And yes, he does bat lefty. The other parents at t-ball were very impressed…See the little twinkle of sun on his helmet? I love it.

Featured Gallery (St. Louis wedding photographer)

Just wanted to let you guys know there is now a featured gallery up on my website. (Click on galleries, then featured gallery.) I’m going to try to keep the featured gallery updated every few months – HOPEFULLY! It contains a sample of what clients can expect when I shoot a wedding. The current featured gallery contains about 60 images from start to finish that I shot during John + Elaina’s wedding back in September.

And just another business side note, I’m completely booked up for 2010. Should have mentioned that a little sooner, but feel free to contact me and I can hit you up with some great referrals from other great photographers in the area. I’d be more than happy to help you out. I am currently booking for 2011, so send me an email if you’re looking for a wedding photographer in St. Louis for next year.

And here’s Aidan doing what he does best – ROCK OUT.

Vacation! (St. Louis wedding photographer)

Just letting everyone know I’ll be on vacation from March 4-14. If you need anything before then, please let me know ASAP. We’ll be in the Caribbean, and I won’t have phone or email access.

And I can’t have a post with no pictures. So here’s my sweet guy. I’m not sure how I’m going to be able to stand being away from him for a full week. I’ve never been apart from him for very long. Wish me luck!

Documenting life (St. Louis photojournalist)

I haven’t been shooting much this winter, and at first, I was loving the break. I really needed to re-charge my batteries before wedding season 2010 began. I put my camera down for a while. I just had to. But after my son turned 3, and I tried to put together a slideshow from a year of his life, from age 2-3, I realized how so many months had gone by with little images of my own child. Not just photographs that I wanted to have printed as a canvas. Just any pictures. And that made me sad. I’ve done a lot of brainstorming and thinking about ideas for Nicole Welch Photography for 2010 and beyond, and I’m really excited about the things to come. I’m thrilled to have the year booked up, and I’m getting REALLY antsy to start shooting some weddings!!! But first, I have decided to go back to my roots in documentary photography. That’s where my love is, and I love bringing that to weddings. At times, though, I suppose reading blogs of other (albeit amazing) photographers, I lose sight of who I am and what I want to be. And I don’t want that at all. I love capturing real, true moments of couples, their families and friends on one of the most important days of their lives. I don’t ask my brides to re-create moments. I don’t ask for hours of time to do posed photos, whether formal or informal. I want to capture you. I want to tell your story. So…..I guess I’m making a pledge to myself to get back to those roots, and I figured what better way than to start at home, more often than not with my own son. So if you see a lot of Mr. Aidan on the blog, you’ll understand why and where I’m coming from.

In the mornings, Aidan loves to wake up and watch an episode of Little Bear.

He’s so calm in the morning. Too bad it didn’t happen more often!

Playing PBS Kids on mommy’s computer.

Time for trains!

Frustrated.

Beloved Thomas.

Aidan’s first time ice skating….Perhaps not the best idea Dan and I ever had…

What have we been up to? (St. Louis photographer)

Well, trying to stay warm, for one! We celebrated Aidan’s birthday very late, took Aidan sledding for the first time in his life, went bowling for the first time, and tomorrow we’re saying goodbye to my baby brother as he leaves for Army basic training. More updates to come. Until then, put your parka on people, it’s brutal out there!

And here’s my big 3-year-old guy. He still has that sweet baby face though.

My baby is 3! (St. Louis childrens photographer)

Here I am! I hadn’t realized it had been so long since I blogged until people started emailing asking where I was. Then I checked the blog and realized it had been nearly a month! Between the crazy holidays and a crazy bug making its way through our house, I haven’t been on my computer much, except to design some albums. So here we are! It’s 2010, and my baby boy just turned 3! Unfortunately for him, we didn’t even get to celebrate because mommy was as sick as a dog. We’re rescheduling his party for this Saturday, so he’ll finally open his presents. Yeah, we’re that horrible, he didn’t open anything. But I don’t think he noticed, he was still too excited about all of his Christmas gifts.

Here he is. The light of my life.
